An environment is more than just a place. It is made of many living and nonliving parts, like plants, animals, soil, and water.
All these parts are connected and work together. This makes the environment a "system." An organism survives by using, or interacting with, these different parts to get what it needs.

Environments Suit Different Organisms
An environment is a home for many living things. But a home that is perfect for one kind of organism might not be good for another. This is because different organisms have different survival needs.
A sandy desert provides everything a camel needs to survive, so it is a suitable home. A polar bear, however, could not meet its needs there. For the polar bear, the same desert is an "unsuitable" environment.
