Learn on PengiAmplify Science (California) Grade 5Chapter 1: Why is East Ferris running out of water while West Ferris is not?

Session 3: Human Impact on Water

Key Idea.

Section 1

Depending on Reservoirs

Key Idea

Communities often store their freshwater in a reservoir. This can be a natural lake or a man-made tank.

A reservoir relies on a balance. Rain and rivers fill it up, while the community draws water out. If the community's demand is higher than the natural supply, the water level in the reservoir will fall, leading to a potential shortage.

Section 2

Water Footprint

Key Idea

Every human activity uses water. We use it directly in our homes for washing and drinking. We also use it indirectly: farms need massive amounts of water to grow food, and factories use it to manufacture products.

When you add up all these uses, a single community can consume a huge volume of water. This heavy consumption puts pressure on local water sources.

Section 3

We Are Part of the System

Key Idea

Humans are not separate from Earth's systems; we are part of them. Our actions directly affect the hydrosphere.

By pumping groundwater or draining reservoirs, we change how water moves and where it is stored. Because we have the power to alter these systems, we also have the responsibility to manage our water use carefully to avoid creating a crisis.
