Lesson 2: The Early Church

In this Grade 6 lesson from IMPACT California Social Studies Chapter 11, students explore how Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire by examining key factors such as Roman roads, a shared language, the promise of the afterlife, and Christian community bonds. Students also learn why Romans persecuted early Christians, including conflicts over emperor worship and military service, and how figures like Emperor Constantine and the Edict of Milan of 313 C.E. transformed Christianity from an outlawed religion to a legally protected faith.

Section 1

A New Faith Travels Roman Roads

Key Idea

The Roman Empire’s well-built Roman roads and safe sea routes allowed Christian missionaries to travel easily. Since many people across the empire spoke common languages like Latin and Greek, the Christian message could be shared with diverse populations.

Christianity also offered a powerful message of hope. It promised a better life after death and created a strong community where all people, including the poor and enslaved, were welcomed as equals. This gave many a sense of belonging and purpose.

Section 2

Christianity's Rise: From Persecution to State Religion

Key Idea

At first, Roman leaders were suspicious of Christianity. Christians refused to worship the Roman gods, which was seen as an act of disloyalty to the empire. For this reason, many faced persecution and were punished for their beliefs.

This situation changed completely with Emperor Constantine. After winning a key battle that he credited to the Christian God, Constantine ended the official persecution of Christians in 313 C.E.

Section 3

The Church Builds Its Structure

Key Idea

As Christianity spread, its communities needed leaders. The church developed an organization to manage its members and teach the faith across the vast Roman Empire.

This new structure was called the church hierarchy, and it was modeled on the Roman government. At the local level, priests led individual churches and their congregations.
