These materials function as thermal batteries. When a PCM changes from a liquid to a solid (freezing), it releases stored thermal energy. By carefully selecting a PCM that freezes near human body temperature, engineers can create a device that provides a consistent, life-saving heat source without requiring electricity.

The Temperature Plateau

Key Idea

During a phase change, a substance exhibits a unique behavior: its temperature stops changing. Even though energy is being transferred out of the substance as it freezes, the thermometer reading remains steady. This period of constant temperature is known as a temperature plateau.

For an incubator, this plateau is the critical functional window. While the PCM is undergoing the phase change from liquid to solid, it releases energy at a steady rate while maintaining a specific, stable temperature. The length of this plateau determines exactly how long the incubator can keep a baby warm before the material completely solidifies and the temperature begins to drop.
