Key Idea
Premature infants lack the body fat and metabolic capacity to regulate their own body temperature. Without external support, they face life-threatening hypothermia. Engineers address this biomedical crisis by designing portable incubators that utilize Phase Change Materials (PCMs).
These materials function as thermal batteries. When a PCM changes from a liquid to a solid (freezing), it releases stored thermal energy. By carefully selecting a PCM that freezes near human body temperature, engineers can create a device that provides a consistent, life-saving heat source without requiring electricity.
