Learn on PengiAmplify Science (California) Grade 8Chapter 1: Force and Velocity

Lesson 3: Direction of Force

Key Idea.

Section 1

Velocity vs. Speed

Key Idea

While speed describes how fast an object moves, velocity provides a more complete description by including both speed and direction.

Speed is a scalar quantity (amount only), whereas velocity is a vector quantity (amount and direction).

Section 2

Directionality of Force

Key Idea

A causal rule governs motion: an object changes its velocity in the same direction as the force exerted on it.

This predictability allows scientists to determine the cause of an object's movement based on the observed outcome.
