Learn on PengiAmplify Science (California) Grade 8Chapter 1: Changes Caused by Light

Lesson 2: Light Carries Energy

Key Idea.

Section 1

Changes Reveal Energy (The Evidence)

Key Idea

Energy itself is often invisible, so we track its movement by observing its effects.

When a material changes state—such as getting warm, fading in color, or generating electricity—after being exposed to light, this change serves as evidence that energy has been transferred.

Section 2

Light Transfers Energy (The Mechanism)

Key Idea

Light functions as a carrier mechanism. It transports energy across the vast distance from the sun to the Earth.

When light reaches an object, an energy transfer occurs. The energy leaves the light wave and enters the material. This transfer is the critical moment that allows the energy to stop moving through space and start affecting the material (the receiver).
