The amount of potential energy stored depends on the strength of the opposing force.

Pushing against a strong magnetic force (e.g., magnets very close together) requires more work than pushing against a weak force. Therefore, overcoming a stronger repulsive force transfers more energy into the magnetic field.

Optimizing for Power

Key Idea

To maximize the launch speed of the spacecraft, the design must maximize stored potential energy.

This is achieved by bringing the repelling magnets as close together as possible (without touching). At this minimal distance, the repulsive force is at its peak.
