To understand how sound moves, one must look at the microscopic structure of matter. All materials—whether solid, liquid, or gas—are composed of incredibly small, invisible units called particles.

These particles are the fundamental building blocks of the physical world. Even materials that appear continuous and solid to the naked eye are actually made of countless distinct particles packed together.

Sound Travels Through a Medium

Key Idea

For sound to travel from a source to a listener (receiver), there must be a continuous physical path. This path is the medium. Because the medium is made of particles, sound travel is actually the movement of energy through this field of particles.

If this chain of particles is broken (as in a vacuum), the sound serves no path and cannot propagate.

Scientists Model Particles in a Medium

Key Idea

Because particles are too small to be observed directly, scientists use models to explain their behavior. A particle model visualizes the medium as a collection of unconnected spheres. This helps explain phenomena that are invisible, such as sound waves.

By using this model, scientists can demonstrate that sound is not a continuous stream of air, but rather a sequence of vibrations passing between individual, interacting particles according to particle theory.
