Learn on PengiAmplify Science (California) Grade 7Chapter 2: Energy and Changes to Populations

Lesson 1: Energy and Reproduction

Key Idea.

Section 1

The Fuel for Life

Key Idea

All organisms need fuel to survive and reproduce. This fuel comes in the form of Energy Storage Molecules (ESMs), such as glucose and fat, obtained from consuming food.

Organisms must convert the energy from these molecules to fuel biological processes. Without sufficient ESMs, an organism cannot support the energy-intensive process of reproduction.

Section 2

Resources Control Births

Key Idea

There is a direct causal link between food and family size. The rate of reproduction is tied to resource availability.

A greater availability of Energy Storage Molecules (more food) allows organisms to reproduce more frequently. This leads to a higher number of births and potential population growth.
