9-4 Surface Area of Pyramids

In this Grade 6 lesson from Reveal Math, Course 1, students learn how to identify and define pyramids, including key vocabulary such as lateral faces and slant height, and represent square and triangular pyramids using nets made up of squares and triangles. Using those nets, students calculate surface area by finding the area of the base and each triangular lateral face separately, then adding them together. This lesson builds spatial reasoning and applies the area formulas for squares and triangles in a three-dimensional context.

Section 1

Anatomy and Nets of Pyramids

Property

A pyramid is a 3D solid with one polygon base and triangular lateral (side) faces that all meet at a single top point called the apex. The shape of the base gives the pyramid its name.

To find the surface area, we use a net—a 2D flat pattern of the pyramid. The number of triangular lateral faces always matches the number of sides on the base.
