10-3 Measures of Center

In this Grade 6 lesson from Reveal Math, Course 1, students learn how to calculate the mean and identify the median as measures of center that summarize a numerical data set with a single value. Students practice finding the mean by dividing the sum of data values by the number of values, and explore the mean as the balance point of a dot plot. The lesson also teaches students how to find a missing data value when the mean is known, using both a balance-point method and an algebraic equation.

Section 1

Calculating the Mean (The Average)

Property

The most common measure of center is the mean, often referred to simply as the "average." It represents a fair share of the total.
To compute the mean:

  1. Add up all the data values to find the total sum.
  2. Divide that sum by the number of data values (N).

Mean = (Sum of all data values) / N
